A celebration of extraordinary women from Northern Britain

From rebels to writers, athletes to astronauts, Kate Fox takes us on a fun, eye-opening journey through the lives of some extraordinary women from Northern Britain— people whose achievements have been hidden for too long. From Cartimandua, the forgotten Iron Age Queen of the North, to Woodbine-smoking football player Lily Parr, Kate shows how these astonishing trailblazers laid the ground for modern stars such as Victoria Wood and Little Mix. She’ll explain why Nicola Adams, Betty Boothroyd and Helen Sharman all have unsung northern champions to thank for paving their way. This funny, enlightening call to arms is the perfect inspiration for anyone ready to rediscover a raft of unsung heroines.

Kate Fox works mainly as a stand-up poet, broadcaster, and speaker. She’s been part of The Price of Happiness, for Radio 4. She has presented Pick of the Week on Radio 4 and been a regular contributor to Radio 3’s The Verb. She has been Poet in Residence for the Great North Run, Glastonbury Festival and Radio 4’s Saturday Live. She has also performed her poetry on BBC1 and BBC2. She’s also a gentle activist and campaigner for the voices of Northerners, the working class, women and the neurodiverse to be heard. She is not the social anthropologist of the same name.

All of our author events are being recorded and will be available to watch after the event. Tickets £5
