A beautiful portrait of farming in the Lake District and Cumbria, from the Solway Marshes to fell-top commons
In 2020, British Life Photographer of the Year, Amy Bateman, took up a commission from Dave Felton to collaborate on a project telling the story of farms throughout the Lake District and Cumbria. Forty Farms is the wonderful result. In this discussion with her publisher, David Felton (Inspired by Lakeland), Bateman will describe her journey, talking about the realities of farming a heritage landscape and the hopes and fears expressed by those behind the farm gate. Their talk will be illustrated with her photos, ranging from the Solway Marshes to the World Heritage fell-top commons; from world-class sheep breeders to award-winning ice cream makers; from James Rebanks to Simon Rogan; from sixth generation farmers to eager newcomers.
Amy Bateman gave up her career as a physiotherapist to look after her children on the family farm near Kendal and came late to professional photography. Her passion is creating images that tell a story. In 2019 she won British Life Photographer of the Year.
Keswick-based publisher and podcaster Dave Felton is the founder of Inspired by Lakeland, devoted to making books and gifts inspired by the wild places he loves.
