Passionate Spirit

Cate Haste’s Passionate Spirit:The Life of Alma Mahler is a major reappraisal of Alma Mahler, one of the most misunderstood and controversial muses in recent history. Haste looks beyond the men who were besotted with Alma, to reassess her legend and legacy. She draws extensively on unpublished letters (both Alma’s and others) and diaries, bringing to light a woman who was determined to pursue her independence and forge her own path.

Cate Haste is a biographer, author and documentary filmmaker.  She spent considerable time studying the letters and diaries of Alma and her friends, husbands and contemporaries, as well as many enjoyable hours interviewing Alma’s granddaughter, Marina Mahler. Her previous works include the prize-winning Sheila Fell: A Passion for Paint , and  books including Craigie Aitchison, Nazi Women, Clarissa Eden and, with Cherie Blair, The Goldfish Bowl.
