Ruth Sutton

Weaving fact and fiction into a Cumbrian story

In her 2014 novel, Fallout, Ruth Sutton placed a fictional character at the heart of the crisis at the Windscale nuclear reactor fire in October 1957. Her new book, Burning Secrets, is set against the backdrop of the Foot and Mouth catastrophe in Cumbria in 2001.

Ruth will look at how a novelist weaves factual research and fictional characters together, and yet still do justice to both.

Ruth Sutton’s family roots are in West Cumbria, although she’s lived in Waberthwaite only since 2007. After a lifetime working in education, she’s now retired from full-time work. When not writing and publishing, Ruth spends her time fell walking and singing, but not necessarily both at once.
