Pat Barker

The Silence of the Girls

Pat Barker reimagines the legendary Trojan War, commonly regarded as a man's story: a quarrel between men over a woman, stolen from her home and spirited across the sea. But what of the other women in this story, silenced by history? What did they speak when alone with each other? In this magnificent historical novel, Pat Barker charts one woman's journey through the chaos of the most famous war in history, as she struggles to free herself and to become the author of her own story.

Pat Barker is one of our greatest contemporary writers and the acclaimed author of The Regeneration Trilogy (Regeneration, The Eye in the Door and The Ghost Road), and the Life Class Trilogy (Life Class, Toby's Room and Noonday). She won the Booker Prize for Ghost Road in 1995. She chooses to explore, with an unflinching eye, controversial subjects, including the brutality of war, to which she has so often returned in her writing. Pat Barker lives in Durham.
