How Eloquence Works
We all know eloquence when we hear it. But what exactly is it? And how might we gain more of it for ourselves? In this talk, based on his new book The Gift of the Gab, David Crystal probes the intricate workings of eloquence from everyday situations (such as wedding speeches and storytelling) to the oratory of great public gatherings such as Barack Obama’s electrifying “Yes we can” speech of 2008. Be prepared for a very entertaining and thought-provoking talk.
David Crystal is honorary professor of linguistics at the University of Bangor, North Wales, and works from his home in Holyhead as a writer, editor, lecturer, and broadcaster. The author of over 100 books on the English language and linguistics, and a world-renowned expert on the history and usage of language, he received an OBE for services to the English language in 1995.
